What is yoga therapy?
Yoga therapy is a truly holistic modality in that it recognises that our health and wellbeing depends on a complex interplay of physical, mental, emotional, environmental and lifestyle factors.
What is the difference between a yoga teacher and yoga therapist?
A yoga teacher often has only one 200 hour training course to their name with maybe some specialities via extra training, but usually their main 200 hour training is very limited on using yoga for health conditions and even limited on anatomy and they tend to teach only group classes. There is no real governing body for yoga teaching, only volunteer registrations (that claim to be governing bodies) such as BWY and Yoga Alliance USA & U.K.
A Certified Yoga Therapist is a specially trained professional whose education and experience has been reviewed and approved to meet standards set by the Professional Standards Authority (U.K.) and therefore can work alongside and within the NHS for additional health support (same as Occupational Therapists, Physios, Osteopaths etc…)
A Yoga Therapist will not only have 1 (or more) Yoga Teaching 200 hour qualifications but must have an accredited 500-800 hour Yoga Therapy Diploma for deep understanding of tailoring a yoga practice to an individual and for health conditions
What’s included in a private yoga therapy session?
In a private yoga therapy session I use all the incredible tools of yoga; postures, breathwork, meditation and mindfulness techniques, and tailor them to the individual to create functional, progressive and safe results, whilst moving towards health goals and aspirations.
This maybe used to address and help with specific health issues or injuries or just simply wanting a practice that is more personal to you in a way that it was once more traditionally taught, 1 to 1.
In a yoga therapy session, we can also include some other disciplines I’m trained in to progress any goals, such as gentle Thai Yoga Massage (assisted yoga), which can be helpful when certain yoga postures are not attainable alone. We can add a dash of Pilates and resistance work if wanted/needed for strong bones and muscles, neuroyoga for the brain and nervous system and CBT, EFT to help overcome pain syndromes and stuck patterns of thinking.
Private yoga therapy can provide you with the tools to support you on your journey and help in the places that you feel stuck.
